Who doesn’t enjoy a good snack from time to time? No matter your diet or lifestyle, you should include opportunities to have a little something in between meals. But what if you’re a vegan? What does plant-based snacking look like?

Healthy vs. Not So Healthy

Snacking is easy when you don’t care about what you eat. Even as a vegan, you can eat some not-so-healthy snack foods (the whole line of Hostess treats comes to mind). After all, there are plenty of unhealthy vegetarians and vegans who subsist on refined carbs and treats. Don’t be “that guy”!

Some easy-to-grab fruit snacks to consider include:

  • oranges
  • berries
  • kiwis

Don’t forget the dried fruits (with or without nuts!). While higher in sugar, they are quick and easy “sometimes” snacks. These include:

  • figs
  • raisins
  • prunes
  • dried apricots, apples, and bananas

As for veggies, many require little more than a quick wash to pack for a quick snack. Try:

  • carrots
  • celery
  • cucumbers
  • broccoli
  • cauliflower
  • mushrooms

Paired with some healthy fats found in peanut butter, tofu cream cheese, or salad dressing, these fruits and veggies are filling and delicious.

How to Snack as a Vegan 2.0

Want to really up your plant-based snacking game? Put aside a little time in the morning or evening before and prepare some delicious treats to keep in your purse, backpack, or office desk.

Ants on a Log: celery, peanut butter, and raisins come together quickly for a snack that’s perfect for kids and adults alike.

Veggies and Hummus: chop up some of your favorite veggies and pair them with homemade or store-bought hummus. Quick, easy, and delish!

Kale Chips: With either a humidifier or oven at a low temperature, you can turn your favorite leafy greens into a tasty, crunchy snack.

Convenience-store Options

Sometimes, you’re out all day and haven’t had the opportunity to think ahead to plan snacks. In that case, the snack aisle at the corner convenience store can look pretty appealing. To ensure you’re getting more healthy options than empty calories, reach for these better-for-you options:

  • bag of nuts
  • Clif Bars
  • dried peas
  • Corn Nuts
  • pickles
