Fun Facts: Madras curry is named for a city formerly known as Madras in Southern India – named when English merchants arrived in 1640. The city has since been renamed to Chennai in 1996. The interesting thing about Madras curry history is that Madras was a word meaning, “a spicy sauce for meat,” and the British thought that it was a specific type of curry. Therefore, there are many different variations of Madras curry, but they usually are red, sweet, savory, and earthy.
